Why Do We Hang Stockings?
"The stockings were hung by the chimney with care, in hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there..."
We've all heard the line. But have you ever wondered WHY we hang stockings at Christmas? There are a couple theories about how the tradition started.
One theory says the origins of today's Christmas stockings started with ancient Yule festivals. During Yule, children set out boots filled with carrots or straw for a magical horse owned by the Norse God Odin. Odin then left gifts or candy for kids who were so kind to leave treats for his horse.
The other theory comes from tales of the historic figure known as Saint Nicholas. Nikolaos of Myra was a 4th century bishop known for his kindness and generosity, and there are many legends about his good deeds. According to one legend, Saint Nicholas heard of one family whose father couldn't afford to pay the dowry for his three daughters to marry. So Nicholas secretly left gold coins in the girls stockings, which were hanging by the fireplace to dry.
Either or both of these legends may have led to today's tradition of hanging stockings for Santa to fill with gifts. We may never know the answer to how it started, but we can probably bet that Santa will continue filling stockings for a long time to come.
